February 26, 2002 (Tuesday)

Day 3

Today began early. We both got out of bed around 5:00. Jared slept well. He was a little worried but was able to sleep.

We talked and prayed, both got our showers and left for the hospital. We had to be there by 6:30. When we arrived, the one day surgery area was packed. I stood in line to check in while Jared went to the restroom. After check in, we waited for the nurse to call us. When we were called, the nurse checked Jared's vitals, etc. and then took us to one of the patient rooms. Jared was then sent to have a Doppler study to check on his veins and blood flow. We came back to the room and waited. Jared was a little anxious. His stomach was bothering him. The nurse came around 10:30 and gave him medication to help him relax. He soon fell asleep. The OR crew came and picked him up at 11:00. I walked with him to the red line that was on the floor. Only patients and hospital personnel go past the red line.

While I waited, I watched TV and read a book. I called and talked to William and my mom.

Dr. Harman came by a little before 12 to tell me that everything went great and Jared was in recovery. He came back to the room around 1:15. He looked good but was sore. The nurse gave him some pain medicine and we relaxed while he recovered.

We left the hospital around 3:15, went by Burger King to get food and then back to the Hope Lodge to eat. Adam called and then Rhonda to check on Jared. We relaxed the rest of the afternoon while I did laundry. Jared took a pain pill around 7:00 and then fell asleep. I talked with Adam and William and spent the rest of the night getting things packed and organized. Dess and Tom called to check on us. Jared woke up around 10:00. I went downstairs to get a snack for us. We ate and then went to bed.

*Jared did well today! He was anxious but I was proud of his courage and strength to handle everything. Thank you Lord for giving him this strength and courage. Jared told me today that he decided this morning that he was going to just trust God. Rhonda had talked with him and read a word that God had given her for him. She also mentioned that her sister Linda’s youth from church wanted to come and visit Jared as a mission’s trip. I told her to tell them to wait until we came back to the Hope Lodge. Lord, I pray for Jared that you’ll touch him. I pray that he’ll heal quickly and his asthma will get better. I pray for his chemo to go well and that he’ll have no major side effects or mouth sores. Lord, touch him and protect him. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

1 Kings 19:1-21 (The Message)

"Ahab reported to Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, including the massacre of the prophets. Jezebel immediately sent a messenger to Elijah with her threat: "The gods will get you for this and I'll get even with you! By this time tomorrow you'll be as dead as any one of those prophets."

When Elijah saw how things were, he ran for dear life to Beersheba, far in the south of Judah. He left his young servant there and then went on into the desert another day's journey. He came to a lone broom bush and collapsed in its shade, wanting in the worst way to be done with it all—to just die:

"Enough of this, God! Take my life—I'm ready to join my ancestors in the grave!" Exhausted, he fell asleep under the lone broom bush.

 Suddenly an angel shook him awake and said, "Get up and eat!" He looked around and, to his surprise, right by his head were a loaf of bread baked on some coals and a jug of water. He ate the meal and went back to sleep.

 The angel of God came back, shook him awake again, and said, "Get up and eat some more—you've got a long journey ahead of you."  He got up, ate and drank his fill, and set out. Nourished by that meal, he walked forty days and nights, all the way to the mountain of God, to Horeb. When he got there, he crawled into a cave and went to sleep.

Then the word of God came to him: "So Elijah, what are you doing here?"

"I've been working my heart out for the God-of-the-Angel-Armies," said Elijah. "The people of Israel have abandoned your covenant, destroyed the places of worship, and murdered your prophets. I'm the only one left, and now they're trying to kill me."

Then he was told, "Go, stand on the mountain at attention before God. God will pass by."

 A hurricane wind ripped through the mountains and shattered the rocks before God, but God wasn't to be found in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn't in the earthquake; and after the earthquake fire, but God wasn't in the fire; and after the fire a gentle and quiet whisper.

 When Elijah heard the quiet voice, he muffled his face with his great cloak, went to the mouth of the cave, and stood there. A quiet voice asked, "So Elijah, now tell me, what are you doing here?"

 Elijah said it again, "I've been working my heart out for God, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies, because the people of Israel have abandoned your covenant, destroyed your places of worship, and murdered your prophets. I'm the only one left, and now they're trying to kill me."

 God said, "Go back the way you came through the desert to Damascus. When you get there anoint Hazael; make him king over Aram. Then anoint Jehu son of Nimshi; make him king over Israel. Finally, anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. Anyone who escapes death by Hazael will be killed by Jehu; and anyone who escapes death by Jehu will be killed by Elisha. Meanwhile, I'm preserving for myself seven thousand souls: the knees that haven't bowed to the god Baal, the mouths that haven't kissed his image."

 Elijah went straight out and found Elisha son of Shaphat in a field where there were twelve pairs of yoked oxen at work plowing; Elisha was in charge of the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak over him. Elisha deserted the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, "Please! Let me kiss my father and mother good-bye—then I'll follow you."

 "Go ahead," said Elijah, "but, mind you, don't forget what I've just done to you."  So Elisha left; he took his yoke of oxen and butchered them. He made a fire with the plow and tackle and then boiled the meat—a true farewell meal for the family. Then he left and followed Elijah, becoming his right-hand man."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (The Message)

"Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
   don't try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
   he's the one who will keep you on track."

Psalm 27 (The Message)
A David Psalm
"Light, space, zest— that's God!
   So, with him on my side I'm fearless,
      afraid of no one and nothing.

 When vandal hordes ride down
      ready to eat me alive,
   Those bullies and toughs
      fall flat on their faces.

 When besieged,
      I'm calm as a baby.
   When all hell breaks loose,
      I'm collected and cool.

 I'm asking God for one thing,
      only one thing:
   To live with him in his house
      my whole life long.
   I'll contemplate his beauty;
      I'll study at his feet.

 That's the only quiet, secure place
      in a noisy world,
   The perfect getaway,
      far from the buzz of traffic.

 God holds me head and shoulders
      above all who try to pull me down.
   I'm headed for his place to offer anthems
      that will raise the roof!
   Already I'm singing God-songs;
      I'm making music to God.

 Listen, God, I'm calling at the top of my lungs:
      "Be good to me! Answer me!"
   When my heart whispered, "Seek God,"
      my whole being replied,
   "I'm seeking him!"
      Don't hide from me now!

 You've always been right there for me;
      don't turn your back on me now.
   Don't throw me out, don't abandon me;
      you've always kept the door open.
   My father and mother walked out and left me,
      but God took me in.

 Point me down your highway, God;
      direct me along a well-lighted street;
      show my enemies whose side you're on.
   Don't throw me to the dogs,
      those liars who are out to get me,
      filling the air with their threats.

 I'm sure now I'll see God's goodness
      in the exuberant earth.
   Stay with God!
      Take heart. Don't quit.
   I'll say it again:
      Stay with God."
