March 12, 2002 (Tuesday)

Day 17

Jared slept well last night.  We were up a few times but went back to sleep.  We got up for the day around 8:00.  Jared's mouth and throat were a little sore so Christy, our nurse, gave him a small amount of morphine.  He settled down and soon fell asleep.  I worked on laundry and took my shower.  Christy said Jared's blood counts had dropped dramatically so he needed platelets.  That was a first.  Lord, please protect Jared from anything that could harm him.

When Jared awoke, he felt better. We had a quiet afternoon watching TV. The chaplain came by along with Dr. Reddy (his neuro-oncologist) and Karen (her assistant).  Jared enjoyed the visit. My Aunt Margie called and later we talked with William, Tom and Dess.  Jared ate half of a corn dog along with chips for lunch. I'm glad that he was hungry.

Tomorrow is the big day.  TRANSPLANT DAY! Hurray. We are also celebrating that Daniel is leaving for the Hope Lodge. The next step before going home.

It is now 5:30 in the afternoon. Jared is sleeping again so I will wake him soon for his shower.

*Lord, I thank you for Jared. I pray Lord that you'll keep him safe. Lord, help him to recover quickly with as little discomfort as possible.  Have your way in his life. In Jesus name.

Jared got up a little after 6:00. He decided to take a bath and then we changed his dressing. I changed the bed linens again. Jared and I watched TV and then I went to the kitchen and heated up a frozen dinner. Jared ate a little with a half slice of bread.

I saw Angela later and she said Larry was still struggling to breathe. His AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein) level has come down though. AFP is a germ cell tumor marker that is monitored to determine if the cancer is responding to treatment. The lower the number, the better. I asked Phil about Jared's AFP. It is now 12.5. It was 0 last week.

*Lord, help me to not be discouraged. Each day flies and drags at the same time. Lord, please forgive me. I'm feeling discouraged and overwhelmed. Lord, I thank you that even in the midst of all this, I can trust you. I thank you that even wallowing in this negativity there is a little spark of hope in me. I thank you that Jared will be healed totally of this cancer. I thank you that Larry will also be healed. Lord, I pray that you'll touch his breathing today. I pray for total healing. Lord, I know that I have no control over any of this. I trust YOU! Help me to keep my eyes on You. I praise your name. In Jesus Name. Amen.

We watched TV and it is now after 10:00. Tomorrow is transplant day. Have your way. In Jesus Name.
